State Rep Charles Key Takes a Strong Stand in Support of Conusmers? September 03, 2009
“I have authored and successfully passed Tenth Amendment legislation here in Oklahoma. For more than 16 years in the Oklahoma Legislature, I have focused on the importance of protecting states’ rights and each citizen’s constitutional rights,” Key said. “I worked with Democrats to pass legislation that would prohibit Oklahoma from participating in the Real ID Act 2005. I will reach out to Democrats again and ask that all lawmakers in Oklahoma support legislation to end the collection of biometric information. I will do the same thing about the collection of DNA samples. I will author or co-author legislation to oppose the use of RFID technology on identification documents. I will also introduce or co-sponsor legislation to end the tying of Social Security Numbers to obtaining a driver’s license. Finally, I want all existing biometric samples, biometric data and Social Security Numbers removed from DMV databases.”

Does this bill repeal REAL ID? August 31, 2009
Politicians keep responding to your pressure by pretending to do what you want. The “responding” part is evidence that pressure works, while the “pretending” part is evidence that we need a larger Downsize DC Army. Here’s the latest response that we think could have a bit of pretense to it . . .

Did People Think No One Would Recognize REAL ID If Introduced Under Another Name? August 21, 2009
Last year, it became clear that REAL ID was dead on arrival as pretty much everyone was against it, and states were refusing to implement it. With the changing of the administration, it seemed like REAL ID was finally going to die completely... but apparently not just yet. EFF alerts folks to the fact that the same concept has basically been reintroduced under the name PASS ID, as if that would trick people:

Time for a national ID card? August 20, 2009
In an effort to block people from using stolen Social Security numbers to falsely prove their eligibility for employment, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wants the government to create a computerized identity card system that would use biometrics to match cardholders to their Social Security numbers. So far, the approach would limit use of smart cards to employment applications. However, experts have floated the idea of using such cards in a variety of other transactions, from commerce to health care services, in physical environments and digitally for online authentication.

PASS ID: REAL ID Reanimated August 20, 2009
In February, the opponents of REAL ID were given a bit of hope when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that she wanted to repeal the REAL ID Act, the federal government's failed plan to impose a national identification card through state driver's licenses. But what has taken place since is no return to sanity, as political machinations have produced a cosmetic makeover called "PASS ID" that has revived the push for a national identification card

South Carolina balks at costs, implications of Real ID August 17, 2009
Real ID is a "top-down, one-size-fits-all mandate" to turn drivers' licenses into "internal passports," writes South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer in a counterpoint to the official position of USA TODAY. Until there is true consensus for a national ID card, writes Bauer, "let's label Real ID for what it really is: an unfunded mandate from Washington" that runs roughshod over the power of state governments.

Q/A: License changes coming in Indiana August 16, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mitch Daniels last week announced changes in the state's new driver's license policy, which goes into effect Jan. 1 and is meant to bring Indiana into compliance with the federal Real ID law.

Now, we don't have to rush to comply federally August 14, 2009
We can just keep using our driver's licenses to operate our cars. Indiana motorists who have to renew their driver's licenses beginning in January should now give thanks to Gov. Mitch Daniels and the state officials who run the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The BMV has decided to slow down a little in its mad dash to make this state one of the first to embrace a de facto national ID card.

Governor Daniels: “Disingenuous” About ID Requirements August 14, 2009
The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Indiana takes Governor Mitch Daniels (R) to task for claiming that the burdensome identification requirements he’s implementing in the state are required by federal law. Many states across the country have refused to participate in the REAL ID Act, preserving their citizens’ privacy and tax dollars. Not Governor Daniels, and in a recent press release he misstated federal identification requirements while acting as if he’s helpless to do anything about them. Says the Journal Gazette: “[B]laming the federal government for non-existent requirements is disingenuous. If the governor wants Hoosiers to take extra steps to prove their identity, he should say so himself.”

Is PASS Better Than REAL ID? (Analysis) August 14, 2009
Under PASS ID, states would still be required to implement drivers' licenses that feature digital photographs, digital signatures and a common machine-readable technology, such as a bar code.

Do We Need a National ID? August 14, 2009
Congress is considering a controversial new plan called Pass ID that would require all American driver’s licenses to meet a set of national standards—creating, in effect, a national ID card. On one side of the debate are those who say the cards are necessary for national security. The idea arose after the 9/11 Commission called for standardized IDs, noting that “travel documents are as important as weapons” for terrorists operating on U.S. soil. Privacy advocates oppose the cards, saying they’d give the government too much access to citizens’ personal information.

Don't blame the feds August 14, 2009
After an outpouring of complaints, Gov. Mitch Daniels has eased requirements for renewing an Indiana driverÂ’s license after Jan. 1. But state officials are still using misinformation to push Hoosiers to meet unnecessarily stringent requirements.

Beware ID funding mandate August 12, 2009
South Carolina played a prominent role in the national resistance to a poorly considered and costly federal mandate for more secure state identification cards, known as REAL ID. That revolt is beginning to succeed with the introduction of new federal legislation addressing major state concerns. But our state must continue to insist that if the federal government wants things done its way, the federal government must pay.

PASS ID: National ID v3.0? August 12, 2009
Michigan state representative Paul Opsommer (R) fits PASS ID into the overall national ID picture: As politicians, we see firsthand how often things are simply retooled, renamed and resubmitted. And in the case of REAL ID, which has its roots in failed attempts to implement AAMVA’s Driver’s License Agreement (DLA), it would not be the first time the concept behind a “one license, one record” national ID card was being repackaged.

The REAL ID Threat is Still Real August 10, 2009
The American people donÂ’t want a national ID card. Nevertheless, the REAL ID Act remains on the books, and the PASS Act (S. 1261) is still waiting in the wings to replace it. HereÂ’s the official description of the PASS Act . . .

Biometric requirement could make E-Verify worth billions August 07, 2009

One of the costliest federal mandates in history August 03, 2009
Kentucky has not enacted any legislation so far concerning REAL ID and neither have many other states. The reason? Well, mostly, the cost. The federal Department of Homeland Security estimates that it will cost states up to $3.9 billion to implement REAL ID although Congress has only appropriated $150 million of that cost, leaving financially-strapped states with a massive unfunded mandate.

States have big stake in REAL ID overhaul August 03, 2009
When Gov. Mark Sanford made his first public appearance recently after devastating personal revelations involving an extramarital affair, he tried to focus on a controversial national mandate known as the REAL ID that resulted in a showdown with the Bush administration. No surprise, the continued spotlight on his personal meltdown diverted the attention the issue deserves. It should be noted, however, that the Republican governor is far more in tune with an overhaul of the law that's being supported by the Obama administration. So are many, if not most of his counterparts across the country, regardless of party labels. That's because the new director of Homeland Security is former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, who is empathetic with the governors' concerns about a program that directs major changes in the way state driver's licenses are issued and utilized. In fact, according to news accounts, when Napolitano was Arizona's chief executive she described REAL ID as "feel good" legislation that wasn't worth the high cost.

National ID cards could trade privacy for security August 02, 2009
The government of India wants to keep track of all the people living in that country — all 1.2 billion of them. It plans to issue plastic identity cards with a microchip in each that would contain biometric information about the holder. The information would perhaps contain an eye scan, fingerprints, national status, credit history or criminal records. The idea is to give each Indian a unique identity, one that would not be stolen or used by others. Into that database the government could store anything about everyone. Can it really be kept private, or would this become a goldmine for hackers?

'Real ID Act' is dead says ACLU August 01, 2009
Many Christians who worry about the biblical mention of a 'one world government' can rest slightly easier today. Back in 2005, the Real ID Act was passed by Congress that mandated states to issue federally approved forms of I.D. that would be required for air travel. The information contained on the I.D. Card would be held in a federal database. These cards could have been in the form of Drivers Licenses or some other form such as a 'personal I.D. card.

Bill Introduced To Repeal Failed Real ID Act July 31, 2009
In a welcome move today, legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives to repeal the discredited Real ID Act of 2005. The REAL ID Repeal and Identification Security Enhancement Act of 2009, introduced by Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN), would repeal Real ID and replace it with the original negotiated rulemaking process passed by Congress as part of the 9/11 Commission recommendations. Twenty-five states have already rejected Real ID, citing its high cost, invasiveness and the bureaucratic hassles it creates for citizens.

£10bn national ID card scheme vs. £65m cuts in higher education July 31, 2009
With the Real ID Act 2005 introducing a national ID card controversy for the US, many are against the scheme. So far, nineteen states have rejected the idea throwing the scheme close to failing. After speaking to my friend, Bryant Zadegan, he believes (paraphrasing) that more states will reject it causing the Obama administration to try and pigeonhole the idea, if not already.

Legislative Update: New Requirements for Driver's Licenses July 31, 2009
Pass ID would keep some of Real IDÂ’s requirements, including digital photographs of those receiving licenses, machine-readable technology in ID cards and the presentation of birth certificates by applicants, but it would drop others.

Senate panel has busy markup session July 29, 2009
S.1261, the PASS ID Act. This bill is designed to replace the REAL ID act adopted by the previous Congress under the Bush Administration. The REAL ID act had mandated that states improve their drivers licenses for security reasons, but states resisted, saying the measure amounted to an unfunded mandate from the Federal Government, which would be unmanageable. The REAL ID bill removes many of the states' objections.

Ideological Purity and the Debate over "National ID" July 29, 2009

A national ID might not be fix we imagine it is July 23, 2009
But in Indiana, we're racing headlong toward one anyway. Just how important a document do we want to make a driver's license? It's already almost a de facto national ID card, the first thing asked for in nearly all financial transactions. Soon, it will serve that function in an even stronger fashion, as Congress works on national standards.

Real ID -- a real pain July 18, 2009
Legislation to create a federal ID card is an expensive, intrusive boondoggle that should be killed. With no debate, the Senate in 2005 approved the Real ID Act:h.r.00418: -- which had been inserted into must-pass legislation authorizing funds for the Iraq war. That may have been the only way to get the deeply controversial law through the upper house, because of all the heightened security measures passed following 9/11, none will have as dramatic and intrusive an effect on the lives of everyday Americans as Real ID.

Review of the Big REAL ID Hearing July 16, 2009
Little good came from the hearing, as it was primarily focused on how to get the states and people to accept a national ID. But there is some good news. First, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared REAL ID dead (much as I did in my testimony two-plus years ago). “DOA” is how she referred to it. She also said that no state will be in compliance with REAL ID by the current December 31, 2009 deadline. This is important because a lot of people think that states doing anything about the security of drivers’ licenses and ID cards are complying with REAL ID.

With the death of the REAL ID Act comes a replacement bill that poses many of the same threats, including what the Campaign for Liberty refers to as a federal grab for personal information. Now the act has been renamed and referred to as an enhanced or higher security driver's license. In reality, however, the only way to resolve the problem is to repeal it, not rename it.

The Surveillance State Threatens All of Us July 16, 2009

I testified in Congress yesterday, at a hearing on the REAL ID Act in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs CommitteeÂ’s Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, the Federal Workforce, and the District of Columbia. My testimony is here.

Identity Theft Expert; Fake IDs are as easy as 1,2,3 July 06,2009
The fact is, our existing identification systems are insufficiently secure, and our identifying documents are easily copied. Anyone with a computer, scanner and printer can recreate an ID. Outdated systems exasperate the problem by making it too easy to obtain a real ID at the DMV, with either legitimate or falsified information.

ID scheme is 'without a purpose' July 06,2009
The government's plan for national ID cards is a "scheme without a purpose" which will not tackle crime or terror, the shadow home secretary has said.

Anti-Real ID Governors Serially Discredited July 06,2009
Something is definitely amiss in the Anti-Real ID political community. Amid chatter of neo-con infiltration in various Republican grassroots groups, 2 of the 5 original Governors in States opposed to the Real ID Act Maine, Alaska, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Montana seem to have been serially removed from effectiveness in public office.

Tell Senate Vote NO on PASS Act July 06,2009
An action alert for those opposed to the continuance of The Real ID Act as the compromised version of the PASS Act. The PASS Act, S. 1261, a heavily compromised legislation which allows the majority of the Real ID Act to stay in place is moving toward a DHS Senate committee hearing in Washington, D.C.

Real ID Act Resurrected! Its comeback is sure to make waves July 03,2009
Defeated back in 2005, the Real ID Act has new legs. The new name is called "The Pass Act". The Pass Act currently in the senate [S.1261] is much more pervasive and extensive in scope. This legislation is likely to generate heavy opposition from Christian groups, Gun Activists, Militia organizations, and libertarians. Here is an early example making its rounds on the Internet, this Special Video Report lists its concerns with the Pass Act

. . . and Replace It with REAL ID July 02,2009
CNN wrote an exciting headline on Wednesday: “Homeland Security Chief Seeks to Repeal Real ID Act.” What they left out was that the replacement would be . . . the REAL ID Act.

Airport Security Screeners as Cops: Is TSA Going Too Far? July 01,2009
TSA security screeners can make even the savviest road warrior just a bit bonkers. WeÂ’ve endured long lines, conflicting policies, inconsistent enforcement and boorish, barking employees. Now comes a deeper concern: Constitutional rights.

Napolitano: Scrap REAL ID July 02,2009
She didnÂ’t put it so bluntly, but DHS secretary Janet Napolitano appears ready to scrap the failed national ID program in the REAL ID Act. This is good news.

Alan Johnson: ID cards 'will never be compulsory' for Britons July 01,2009
Alan Johnson signalled a significant reversal over the GovernmentÂ’s identity card policy yesterday when he ruled out making them compulsory for British citizens.

Real ID law to receive makeover under Obama

Battered, not dead

A law requiring US citizens to present federally mandated ID cards for "official purposes" such as boarding a plane is likely to be shaken down at the door under the US Department of Homeland Security's new secretary, Janet Napolitano.

The ex-governor of Arizona, tapped as chief homeland spook by Obama in January, has been an outspoken adversary of the law since its introduction as a rider act for the "Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005."

Revisions to the law being proposed by Napolitano and other officials, however, appear to be motivated by the cost of implementing the law, rather than out of concern for the privacy of American citizenry or states' rights.

Intelligence pick wants national ID

Urges creation of federal system 'so we can better know who is who

JERUSALEM – Following the 9/11 attacks, President Obama's nominee for a top intelligence post advocated that to effectively combat terrorism, the U.S. government should implement a national identity system, "so we better know who is who."

How easy Is To Clone Biometric Passport or Enhanced Real ID Drivers License Embedded with RFID Chips?

The Truth May Shock You

ePassports and Enhanced Real ID Drivers License's don't make much sense without one-only or unequalled biometric passport & Enhanced Real ID Drivers License readers. Let’s face it once and for all, ANY electronic data storage method by which content can be read (e.g. RFID, smart/storage cards, etc.), gives it the obvious potential to be hacked, copied and cloned. Let’s take this one step further. If stored information is designed to be read, then a device must exist with the ability to read the stored information for it to be of any value. Now, let us apply that simple logic to stored information that’s meant to be read in a widespread application. In this type of application, multiple standardized reading devices must exist in order to always yield the same result from that stored information. What purpose does, a means of identification serve, if we cannot be near certain that it has not been compromised? Further, once that ID has been compromised, how can it be prevented from yielding positive identification where not intended? For years, as technology developers would have it, much effort has been focused on providing more and more secure methods of storing sensitive information, without addressing the root of the problem. Regardless of how securely information is stored, because it is designed to be read, illicit methods by which to read the information will be found. Once that has been accomplished, the ability to create both fake and cloned ID’s exists. ePassport readers are addressing the standards and recommendations of predefined requirements like the Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTD). In order to make them usable, they must be consistent. If you have a set of identical targets (e.g. ePassports or National IDs or Driving Licenses or Employee cards etc.), breaching one of them is a breach of all of them. Identical electronic device is a single point of failure.

DMV drops the sinister hologram

he state Division of Motor Vehicles has stopped decorating driver’s licenses with a silvery hologram that was designed as a nationwide security tool — and derided as the symbol of an anti-American plot.

The foil stamp features the shimmering images of an automobile and a globe centered on North America. It appears on the flip side of 4.6 million licenses issued since December 2006.

Driver's Privacy Protection Act Not as protective as it sounds

Representative Patrick McHenry thinks the Real ID is a good law and one of his talking points is that our data is secure because it is under Driver's Privacy Protection Act. They left out the sharing of information through the Driver's License Agreement (DLA) under the Real ID Act which allows your private data to be shared with Mexico and Canada. You will see under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act that there are many entities that can view your private information including private investigators and the DMV is allowed to sell or rent your private personal information. Don't take our word for it. Read it for your self.

SHOW ME YOUR PAPERS PLEASE! NC REAL ID IS IN FULL SWING!

North Carolinians Against Real ID No this isn't Nazi Germany of the Former Soviet Russian Communist Regime. This is The United States of America,. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Well maybe not so Free any longer.

The Real ID Act was tacked onto a budget spending bill in 2005 and was passed without any debate from our members of congress.

North Carolina, the First in Flight has also lauded itself for being First in Compliance to the national Identification System or Real ID, et al National ID Card.

The 9/11 Commission suggested a National ID Card to prevent terrorists from getting a fake id. Others claim it will stop illegal immigrants from getting driver's license. Terrorists are great at getting things without id and illegals immigrants are bypassing the Real ID Act thanks to states and localities providing them with resident id cards to bank and drive.

The Real ID Act will produce a massive database full of copies of birth certificates, social security cards, biometric photos, and other sensitive data of everyone who wishes to have an id or driver's license.

This information will be shared with other states, countries and private corporations. Despite the fact that Homeland Security has been hacked over 850 times in the past tow years and the Pentagon has had sensitive data breached, they somehow feel having all of our information in one database will protect us. If they cannot protect the data which could compromise the security of our nation, how are they going to protect ours? Tell your Legislators to pass Legislation to end the Real ID.
